Chapter 15, Question 1.
Breast cancer cohort study

A group of investigators has set up a cohort study to investigate whether women who consume a higher amount of red meat in their diet have an increased risk of developing breast cancer. Participating women are asked to complete a food diary for a specific week each year for five years to record their eating habits during that week. At the time of recruitment, women are asked to complete a questionnaire that collects information on several demographic and socioeconomic factors (including age, socioeconomic status and geographic location) as well as known risk factors for cancer (including family history of breast cancer, contraceptive use, parity, and smoking status).
Select all of the statements which you believe are true:

The investigators chose to perform a cohort study as women’s dietary habits are unlikely to change over time.
The investigators chose to perform a cohort study as this would ensure that a woman’s consumption of red meat occurred prior to the development of breast cancer.
By asking women to complete an annual food diary, the investigators are able to assess changes in dietary habits over time.
The main exposure of interest in this study is the incidence of breast cancer.
The main exposure of interest in this study is smoking status.
